“A regular skin checkup can literally save your life.” Jennifer Krasnoff, MD

This condition is often seen in the setting of a familial predisposition to asthma, hayfever, or allergic rhinitis. This condition is chronic and may be influenced by changes in weather, stress, or environmental exposures. Skin dries out easily, and becomes quickly irritated by soaps, excessive washing, temperature extremes, and chemicals. Protection and lubrication is of utter importance even when the skin looks clear.

Prevention of new flare-ups and preventing infection is important to managing your skin condition.

Helpful hints in managing your skin condition:

  • DO NOT bathe, shower or wash excessively
  • DO NOT take hot baths or showers - use lukewarm water instead
  • DO NOT wear harsh fabrics, such as wool or polyester - wear cotton or silk
  • DO NOT use fabric softeners or anti-static cling agents
  • DO NOT use perfumes or colognes – use preservative, fragrance free products
  • DO moisturize your skin several times a day, especially after bathing
  • DO humidify the house

Recommended Cleansers:
Cetaphil, CeraVe, Avene(Trixera), Aquanil, Aveeno

Recommended Moisturizers:
Cetaphil, CeraVe, Avene(Trixera), Eucerin, Aquaphor, Vaseline, Elta

For Controlling Itch:
There can be a vicious cycle of scratch and itch. Antihistamines are recommended to break this cycle. Sedating antihistamines like Benadryl, hydroxyzine(Atarax), doxepin, may be prescribed to be taken at bedtime. Non sedating antihistamines like Claritin (loratidine) or Zyrtec (cetirizine) may be suggested for daytime use. You will need to adjust your dose to balance between itchiness and sedation. DO NOT drive or operate vehicles when drowsy. Over-the-counter anti-itch topical formulas include Sarna lotion, Eucerin calming oil, Eucerin menthol spray, or Neutrogena ant-itch lotion may be used for itching.

You have likely been prescribed topical medicines to use to the affected area of the body once to twice daily. Please use as directed and return to see us to evaluate your improvement. When conventional topical treatments are not effective, we will counsel you on other treatment options.
