“A regular skin checkup can literally save your life.” Jennifer Krasnoff, MD

Liquid nitrogen is a freezing agent used to treat many different dermatologic conditions.  These include:

  • precancerous lesions (actinic keratoses)
  • warts
  • molluscum contagiosum
  • irritated seborrheic keratoses
  • many other skin lesions

What to expect following treatment:
Immediately after treatment, you may sense pain or throbbing of the treated lesion.  Anti-inflammatory agents (i.e. Ibuprofen, Aleve) may be taken for pain if necessary. Within days of treatment, you will experience blistering or crusting of the treated site.  Any coloration of the blister or crust (red, black, brown) is normal.  The color merely represents the contents of this blistery substance (i.e. blood, serum).

How to care for your skin following treatment:
Clean the areas gently using soap and water.  You may use hydrogen peroxide on a Q-tip to clean away any crust or blood.  It is preferable to removing the scabs and keep the area covered with an antibiotic ointment and Band-Aid.  This will enable your wound to heal more quickly and stay protected and clean.  You may perform all you usual activities of washing, bathing and showering.

Your lesions may require more than one treatment.  For this reason, be sure to keep you follow-up appointment so that we may properly evaluate the need for further treatment.
