Laser Treatment for Tattoo Removal

Laser removal can safely and effectively remove unwanted tattoos, with minimal downtime and side effects. Lasers are capable of selectively targeting and removing tattoo images without damaging surrounding tissue, which greatly decreases the risk of scarring.

At Dermatology Associates, we use Medlite Laser, considered the industry’s gold standard laser for multi-colored tattoo removal. Medlite Laser provides a safe, highly effective alternative to earlier, skin-damaging methods like surgical excision, dermabrasion, which removed the top layer of skin, and acid removal.

Lasers remove tattoo ink by targeting ink’s pigment with a high intensity light beam, causing it to break up into smaller molecules. The ink is then naturally absorbed by the body, fading the tattoo until it is no longer visible.

What to expect from your tattoo removal treatment

Thirty to sixty minutes before treatment, we will apply a topical lidocaine cream to numb the area being treated. The numbing process will take up to an hour. During the procedure, lasers focus quick, high-intensity pulses through the top layers of skin, over the tattoo ink pigment, heating and breaking apart the ink particles that make up the image, as if chipping a large boulder into increasingly smaller fragments. These ink fragments are absorbed by the body’s lymphatic system.

Post-treatment, you may experience blistering and possible scarring. You may receive a topical treatment to soothe the area and promote healing.

Because the location, color, shape and size of each tattoo is unique, the removal process is tailored to each individual patient. The exact number of treatments needed to remove a given tattoo removal will depend on a number of factors, including the age of a tattoo, ink density, color and location. Most tattoos require 10-20 sessions, each lasting approximately 15 minutes. Tattoos become progressively lighter following each visit.
