“A regular skin checkup can literally save your life.” Jennifer Krasnoff, MD

With over 2 million people diagnosed with skin cancer annually, the question isn’t whether you need sunscreen, but whether you know how to use it correctly.  While we recommend sun protective clothing as your first line of defense, sunscreen is a crucial accompaniment.

Use this 5-step guide to make sure you are protecting yourself:

  1. Use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant product with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or greater.  Broad-spectrum products protect your skin against both UVA and UVB rays, which along with artificial sources of UV like tanning beds and sun lamps, are proven to cause cancer. (Learn more about the dangers of tanning beds here.)
  2. To allow the sunscreen to fully absorb, apply it to dry skin, 15 minutes before going outdoors.
  3. Be generous: according to the National Institutes of Health, most people use only half the recommended amount of sunscreen. Coat the exposed areas of your body with one ounce (a shot glass full) of the product, adjusting for body size.
  4. Double check exposed areas: be aware of such areas as arms, hands and tops of feet. Be sure to coat the back of your neck and ears. Protect lips with a balm or SPF 30+ lipstick.
  5. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, even on cloudy days, and after swimming or sweating.
